The Way of Saint James from Oviedo to Lugo in 9 stages

The Way of Saint James from Oviedo to Lugo in 9 stages

Since you are thinking of doing the Primitive Way, why not start at the beginning? Discover the Way of St. James from Oviedo, the first pilgrimage route to Compostela along the paths that King Alfonso II walked in the 9th century: the first pilgrim to a Compostela that did not yet exist and that would come to be from the discovery of the apostolic tomb. One of the most authentic routes, completely surrounded by nature in the highlands of Asturias and Galicia. Shall we do the Way of St. James from Oviedo?

Itinerary

Day 1. Welcome to Oviedo, the capital city of Asturias

Welcome to the Camino Primitivo from Oviedo to Lugo. On this first day you should arrive in Oviedo from your place of origin. We recommend you do it as soon as possible to enjoy the city or, if it is not possible, book an extra night to get to know it at your leisure. It deserves no less. Oviedo - in Asturian Uviéu - is one of the most impressive cities in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, and it is also a perfect place to get to know some of the nearby points of interest, such as the temples of Naranco and Lillo or the mythical sanctuary of Covadonga.

Day 2. Stage Oviedo - Grado

Distance: 27 km.
Duration: 6:30 hours
Accommodation: Grade

Oviedo was the capital of the only Christian kingdom on the peninsula that was not conquered by the Arab expansion that gave rise to the Umayyad Caliphate. From there, in the 9th century, King Alfonso II set out for Compostela when he received the news from the bishop of Iria Flavia of the discovery of the tomb of the favourite of the apostles. That journey made him the first pilgrim, and the route he followed is what is known today as the Primitive Way. The destination of the journey, which runs through the impressive central Asturian landscape, is Grado: a small town that is a crossroads of routes and also of medieval and Indiano architectural references.

Day 3. Stage Grado - Salas

Distance: 21 km.
Duration: 5 hours
Accommodation: Chambers

The third day of your adventure takes you through Cornellana, home to the magnificent monastery of San Salvador. From there, through the valley of the river Nonaya and between small hamlets, you will reach the beautiful historic centre of Salas, where you will find remains that bear witness to the great importance of this town in the past: the Santa María la Mayor Collegiate Church, the Tower and the Palace of Valdés. Be sure to visit the Pre-Romanesque Museum.

Day 4. Stage Salas - Tineo

Distance: 22.3 km.
Duration: 5:30 a.m.
Accommodation: Tineo

A day to ascend towards La Espina, between meadows and forests of oak and chestnut trees which, on this route, will become your most faithful fellows. You can also enjoy the rural architecture through examples such as the church of Santa María and its transept in Porciles, or the chapel of Cristo de los Afligidos (Christ of the Sorrowful ones) at La Espina. The end of the stage at Tineo (in Asturian, Tinéu) will not disappoint you.

Day 5. Stage Tineo - Pola de Allande

Distance30.2 km.
Duration7:30 a.m.
Accommodation: Pola de Allande

As the walker enters the western region of Asturias, he will notice how the ecological and scenic richness that characterises this Primitive Way increases. The day will end in the charming village of Pola de Allande (La Puela), the perfect place for a well-deserved rest after one of the hardest days on this route, with many slopes and changes in level.

Day 6. Stage Pola de Allande - Berducedo

Distance: 20.5 km.
Duration: 5 hours
AccommodationBerducedo

Another day on this Primitive Way between Oviedo and Lugo through the impressive mountains of western Asturias. It will be time to climb the Palo pass (1,147 metres above sea level), from where you can enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding area. The day ends in Berducedo, the perfect place to try its famous corn "tortos" and, of course, to continue enjoying the unbeatable Asturian gastronomy.

Day 7. Stage Berducedo - Grandas de Salime

Distance: 22 km.
Duration: 5:30 a.m.
AccommodationGrandas de Salime

The last fully Asturian stage of the Primitive Way, which will take you from Berducedo to Grandas de Salime, bordering the beautiful reservoir of this town. The views from the Ballena (Whale) viewpoint are simply unforgettable. At Grandas be sure to visit some of its interesting monuments, such as the collegiate church of El Salvador.

Day 8. Stage Grandes de Salime - A Fonsagrada

Distance: 27.4 km.
Duration: 6:30 hours
Accommodation: A Fonsagrada

On this day you will cross the official border between Asturias and Galicia to realize how few — very few — things change. The route will take you to the O Acebo pass, in Os Ancares mountain range, more than 1,110 metres above sea level. Small churches, hermitages and chapels dot the route, arranging the territory covered with small villages dedicated to agriculture and livestock farming.

Day 9. Stage A Fonsagrada - O Cádabo

Distance: 25.1 km.
Duration: 6 hours
Accommodation: O Cádavo

Welcome to the penultimate day of this section between Oviedo and Lugo, which will take you to O Cádavo. The route passes by the ruins of the Montouto hospital, founded during the 14th century to provide shelter for the pilgrims who made the journey in those days. Next to it, the prehistoric remains of Pedras Dereitas travel much further back in time and allow us to imagine other cultures and religiosities.

Day 10. Stage O Cádavo - Lugo

Distance: 31.3 km.
Duration7:30 a.m.
Accommodation: Lugo

The last stage of your adventure on the Primitive Way from Oviedo to Lugo, from O Cádavo to the capital of Lugo, the first city after leaving Oviedo. Another day of rural scenery that becomes more densely populated as you approach Lugo, one of the great historic cities of Galicia since Roman times.

Day 11. Unveil Lugo

After breakfast, our services associated with this programme come to an end. But Lugo has a lot to offer. And you are going to love it. Whether your interest is more religious (its cathedral has the privilege of the permanent exhibition of the sacred form) or more historical (the abundant remains of the Roman Lucus Augusti and its imposing wall await you there), or more gastronomic. In Galicia, everyone knows: "to eat as a king, visit Lugo".

I have done part of the Camino de Santiago with Proguías, specifically from Roncesvalles to Logroño. My Camino has been a unique, emotional and unforgettable experience. I am very grateful to Proguías and especially to Alba for helping me to prepare it, with great enthusiasm, and for feeling accompanied throughout the journey. It is impressive what a small agency like this can do. Fluid and direct communication, without promising the impossible and always with the truth up front. Some bigger companies could learn something.
