What is the Xacobeo?
Whenever the 25th of July, the feast day of St. James, falls on a Sunday, the whole year is considered a Holy Year. This happens only 14 times every century, and those who make the pilgrimage to Compostela at that time can gain plenary indulgences for their sins. This tradition, which has its roots in the discovery of the apostolic tomb in the 9th century, has managed to perpetuate one of the most important pilgrimage routes in the world. And undoubtedly the best known.
Today, the reasons for making the pilgrimage to Compostela are not only religious. Thousands of people travel the same routes for cultural, sporting or recreational reasons, enjoying all that this route has bequeathed to us. Impressive world heritage cities, small villages that have been assisting pilgrims on their journey for centuries, and a shared culture of effort and respect for the natural environment that goes beyond differences in language, way of thinking or skin colour.
Choose your way
As the phenomenon of pilgrimage has been forged over more than a millennium, the millions of pilgrims have also left behind a network of Caminos that come from all parts of Europe, by land or by sea, with a single objective: to venerate the remains of the apostle St. James the Greater. Today there are 8 officially recognised ways, with different variants and great scenic, heritage and cultural interest.
Which one are you going to choose??
The Jubilee and the Compostela.
For those people who do the Camino de Santiago for religious reasons, the Holy Year allows the possibility of gaining the Jubilee - that is, obtaining forgiveness for their sins. For this, the Church has defined three requirements:
- Visit the Cathedral, whether on pilgrimage or not.
- Attend mass and pray.
- Confession of sins and communion (within fifteen days before or after arrival)
In addition, those who meet the requirements of the pilgrimage can obtain special recognition from the Chapter of Compostela: the Compostela.
