Camino de Santiago from A Coruña in 4 stages

from
380

We welcome you to the Camino de Santiago from A Coruña, along the so-called English Way, which was born as a pilgrimage route for the journeys of English, Scottish, Irish, Scandinavian, Flemish and other countries' devotees who arrived by boat to the Galician ports of A Coruña, Ferrol, Ares or Betanzos. The recovery of this route has defined, at present, two possible starting points: Ferrol or A Coruña. A short, pleasant and well signposted itinerary, which is gaining more and more walkers every year and to which we welcome you from now on. Leaving from A Coruña, there are a total of 96 km to cover in 4 comfortable stages while you discover the landscapes, history, gastronomy and popular culture of Galicia.

Day 1. Starting the Way of Saint James from A Coruña

You will arrive on your own in the city of A Coruña for the Camino de Santiago. We recommend you arrive in good time to be able to enjoy the charms of a city open to the Atlantic like few others, with its two coastal facades. Stroll along Riazor and Orzán beaches, visit the Tower of Hercules, the Domus and the Aquarium.

The streets of the old city and the area around the Plaza de María Pita offer small bars and quality restaurants. If you would like us to accompany you, we can offer you a guided tour of A Coruña that will show you the great attractions of this ancient capital of the Kingdom of Galicia, as well as its little secrets.

Day 2. Stage A Coruña - Sarandós

Distance: 24.3 km.
Duration: 6 hours.
Accommodation: Sarandós

Your route to Santiago from A Coruña will start at the port, leaving behind the statue of the Virgen del Carmen and the Castle of San Antón. You will walk along the Parrote promenade and pass by buildings such as the Capitanía General or the Plaza de la Constitución until you reach the Plaza de María Pita. If you haven't already done so, it's a good time to visit the church of Santiago, just a few metres from this large square.

During the stage you will walk along the estuary of O Burgo, where there was an ancient medieval port that welcomed pilgrims arriving by sea to these lands, mainly from English, Flemish and Scandinavian ports.

The prosperity of this town around the port was due to the protection of the Order of the Temple, which built a castle-fortress nearby and a church where the Romanesque church of Santa María do Temple stands today.

Passing through Sergude you can enjoy one of the most valued foods by the Galicians: bread. Here the bread of Carral is famous, an artisan bread that will delight any pilgrim. In Sarandós is the Pazo de Barral, built in the first half of the 16th century, where Philip II of Spain himself spent the night on his way to A Coruña to embark for England, where he was to marry Mary Tudor.

Day 3. Sarandós Stage - San Paio de Buscás

Distance: 16.5 km.
Duration: 4 hours.
Accommodation: You are looking for

The second stage runs through a pleasant rural setting, far from yesterday's urban stage. Although it is only a few kilometres we recommend that you take it easy because it has a demanding profile with the ascent to Alto do Peito (450m) - the highest point of the English Way.

It is not a stage with many intermediate settlements, so we recommend that you take the necessary provisions to cope with it and, if you do the stage in summer, we recommend that you take enough water with you.

Near the end of the stage, in As Travesas, you will join the people who are doing the English Way from Ferrol and you will all continue towards Hospital de Bruma, today a small village of just over 40 neighbours, but which in the Middle Ages was an important point of care for pilgrims.

You will continue your Way to San Paio de Buscás, where you will find a small church of rural Romanesque origin, which hides one of the most violent religious images, known as the "beheaded saint".

Day 4. Stage San Paio de Buscás - Sigüeiro

Distance: 20.2 km.
Duration: 5 hours.
AccommodationSigüeiro : Sigüeiro

Unlike the previous stage, today's section is not very difficult. There are few slopes and you will walk on tarmac and dirt tracks. We will cross the region of Ordes, a place famous for its turnip greens, a typical vegetable of the Galician broth, which you will be able to taste during today's stage.

You will walk mainly along the old Camino Real. On your arrival at A Baxoia you will have to choose whether to continue along the official route, close to the road, or whether you prefer to take the variant that runs along a forest track. Once in Sigüeiro you will have to cross the bridge that spans the river Tambre. It is a bridge of medieval origin that has been altered and adjusted to the needs of the time over the years.

Day 5. Sigüeiro - Santiago de Compostela

Distance: 18 km.
Duration: 4:30 hours.
Accommodation: Santiago de Compostela

In this last stage, although more than half of it runs through pleasant rural and wooded areas, as we enter Santiago we will cross approximately 5km of industrial area and urban route.

You will enter the city through the neighbourhoods of San Caetano and Basquiños, finally reaching the old town. Here the cathedral and the spectacular old town await you, full of places to visit.

Not only the aforementioned cathedral, which is a must-see, and for which we offer expert guides, but also other places such as the Monastery of San Martiño Pinario, the second largest in Spain; the Hostal dos Reis Católicos and its wonderful Renaissance architecture; the University - the fifth oldest in Europe -, its market, etc. Welcome to Santiago and congratulations, you have completed your Camino.

Day 6. Discover Santiago de Compostela

After a well-deserved and refreshing rest, you will have the whole day free to explore the Holy City: its Cathedral and the rest of its monumental complex, as well as the places of interest outside it. If you want, we can also help you with this. And, if you have time, we have some complementary activities that may be of interest.

If you have time, we recommend staying an extra night in Santiago in order to reach the End of the World with our full day visit to Fisterra. You won't be disappointed.

Lodging

During the Camino, sleeping well and resting is essential. Here are some images of some of the accommodation we work with on this route.

Frequent Asked Questions

Yes, in our programmes you choose the starting date. The Camino de Santiago can be done all year round, although in January and February many accommodations are closed for rest, so if you want to do it in those dates, we recommend you that you consult us first

Most of the accommodation is located next to the Camino, at the place where you will finish each stage. When you make your booking we will generate for you the documentation with the exact address and other location data.

If the available accommodation is more than 1.5 km from the Camino, we will provide a transfer at no extra cost to you.

In our programmes we include the option of hiring a luggage transfer service, with a limit of 1 piece of luggage of up to 20 kg per person. There is the option to increase the number of items, but this is not usually necessary. In addition, we will give you luggage identifiers (similar to those at airports) so that you can leave your backpack with the accommodation staff, properly identified, and the shuttle will pick it up there. It is important to do this before 8:00 am, so that our team can take it to the next accommodation before your arrival. In addition, if you plan to travel with more luggage than the Camino, we can also transport the luggage you are not going to use to your last accommodation, so that you can then continue your journey.

Although the Camino is done on foot or by bicycle, you may need a vehicle from the airport to the starting point of your pilgrimage or to make a trip to a place of interest near the end of your stage. In these cases, we provide you with private transport vehicles whose price varies depending on the distance. You can see it among the options by clicking on "I want to book my Camino".

By default and compulsory, all our programmes include travel insurance with specific coverage for the Camino de Santiago. You can see the details in the section Insurance of our website.

All our programmes include a 24-hour telephone support service, should you need help at any time during your experience. This means that you can also contact us outside office hours (when you are on pilgrimage).

If you want to book this programme, you have the following options available a form where you can indicate the starting date, the type of accommodation and a series of optional services. The price will be updated according to the options you choose, so you have full control. Once you have configured your trip, click on "Book" to make the payment.

Once we receive your request, you will automatically receive a proof of purchase and within 48 working hours we will contact you to confirm the details of your booking and provide you with the documentation.

In Proguías we also work with tailor-made programmes (short stages, intermediate rest days, itineraries different from those proposed, etc.). If you are looking for a Camino that meets your needs/preferences, you can ask us for a quote here.
