The Sanabrés Way from Ourense to Santiago

Welcome to the Sanabrés Way. Since the discovery of the remains of St. James, Christians and Mozarabs from the south of the Iberian Peninsula have followed the Silver Way to reach Compostela, arriving in Astorga to connect with the French Way. Many, however, took a detour through Sanabria to reach the goal by crossing the interior of Ourense in a southeast-northwest route known as the Southeast Way or Camino Sanabrés. The last 100 km coincide with a city, Ourense, founded in Roman times and which is, in addition to being the thermal capital of Galicia, a destination to discover. Do you dare?

Itinerary

The Sanabrés Way from Ourense to Santiago
The Sanabrés Way from Ourense to Santiago

Day 1. Discover Ourense, the thermal capital of Galicia

Your Camino Sanabrés will start in Ourense, where you will arrive on your own the day before the first stage. We recommend that you do it as soon as possible because Ourense has a lot to see. For starters, a cathedral that is a delight and that holds the Portico del Paraíso, brother of the famous Portico de la Gloria and erected by the Matthean workshop only a few years after finishing the one in Compostela. But Ourense is much more. Here you can bathe in its publicly accessible hot springs, marvel at the old city or stroll along the banks of the river Minho, the most important river in Galicia. Good options to warm up for what awaits you the next day.

Day 2. Stage Ourense - Cea

Distance: 22.9 km.
Duration: 5:30 hours
Accommodation: Cea

This Way, which is the variant of the Vía de la Plata that goes to Compostela through the interior of Galicia without going to Astorga, is one of the itineraries to be discovered. Many pilgrims start it in Ourense, thus making the last 100 km required by the chapter to grant the Compostela. But not only for that. Ourense is one of the Galician cities with the greatest historical and artistic heritage, and is also the thermal capital of Galicia. In addition, this stage will leave you in Cea, a place that has become famous for its magnificent bread, and very close to one of the main Cistercian monasteries of Galicia: Oseira, which is well worth a visit.

Day 3. Stage Cea - Lalín

Distance: 27.2 km.
Duration: 6:30 hours
Accommodation: Lalín

From the lands of Cea, dominated by the old monastic manor of Oseira, the Sanabrés Way that we started in Ourense reaches in this stage one of the main towns of Galicia: Lalín. This is the longest stage of this route, which crosses the Deza region, whose valley is descended in the last stretch. You will leave the province of Ourense behind to enter the province of Pontevedra. A route through the green and mountainous Galicia that exists beyond the cities and the estuaries.

Day 4. Stage Lalín - A Bandeira

Distance: 22.4 km.
Duration: 5:30 hours
Accommodation: A Bandeira

We welcome you to a new day of peaceful pilgrimage, unhurried and without the hustle and bustle of other routes. In this stage you will cross the lands of Trasdeza and the river that gives it its name — the Deza — to continue in search of Compostela. You will stop first, however, in a small village built at the foot of the old Camino Real that linked Santiago with Ourense, and through which transited, among others, the wine of the region of O Ribeiro, highly appreciated in the city of the apostle in the Middle Ages, as attested by the Codex Calixtinus. When you get to A Bandeira, be sure to order an empanada, one of the most popular preparations of the Galician gastronomy. And if you're hungry for more, nearby is the monastery of Carboeiro, rescued from ruin a few years ago and set in stunning surroundings.

Romanesque bridge in Ourense, known as "Ponte Vella".

Day 5. Stage A Bandeira - Outeiro

Distance: 16.9 km.
Duration: 4 hours.
AccommodationOuteiro de Vedra

Penultimate stage of this Sanabrés Way from Ourense before reaching Santiago de Compostela. A route without great difficulties and with few kilometres that allows you to enjoy the landscape with the calm that it requires and to stop in Ponte Ulla to taste its wine and its famous "Sanabrés" wine. augardiante - a liqueur made from the skin (bagasse) of the grape. And not only that. Under the columns of the immense Gundián bridge, built to carry the railway to Compostela, is said to be the submerged monastery of San Salvador da Cova.

Day 6. Stage Outeiro - Santiago de Compostela

Distance: 16.5 km.
Duration: 4 hours.
Accommodation: Santiago de Compostela

Few sensations can compare to entering Compostela after walking for days. Sometimes even for weeks. Doing so along the Camino Sanabrés or Camino Mozárabe also has the advantage of allowing you to do so at the foot of Pico Sacro (Sacred Peak), one of the places most closely linked to the Jacobean tradition. In the tradition, Queen Lupa lived in its caves and on its slopes it happens a part of the history of the translatio — the bringing of the remains of the apostle to Gallaecia and his burial in what today is the third holy city of Christianity along with Rome and Jerusalem. Have you got everything ready for this last stage?

Day 7. A day to get to know Compostela

This last day is a well-deserved tribute to your efforts. After resting, you will have the whole day free to explore the Holy City: its Cathedral and the rest of its monuments. Most of the accommodation is located next to the Camino, at the place where you will finish each stage. When you make your booking we will generate for you the documentation with the exact address and other location data.

In our programmes we include the option of hiring a luggage transfer service, with a limit of 1 piece of luggage of up to 20 kg per person. There is the option to increase the number of items, but this is not usually necessary. In addition, we will give you luggage identifiers (similar to those at airports) so that you can leave your backpack with the accommodation staff, properly identified, and the shuttle will pick it up there. It is important to do this before 8:00 am, so that our team can take it to the next accommodation before your arrival. In addition, if you plan to travel with more luggage than the Camino, we can also transport the luggage you are not going to use to your last accommodation, so that you can then continue your journey.

Although the Camino is done on foot or by bicycle, you may need a vehicle from the airport to the starting point of your pilgrimage or to make a trip to a place of interest near the end of your stage. In these cases, we provide you with private transport vehicles whose price varies depending on the distance. You can see it among the options by clicking on "I want to book my Camino".

The price will be updated according to the options you choose, so you have full control. Once you have configured your trip, click on "Book" to make the payment.

Once we receive your request, you will automatically receive a proof of purchase and within 48 working hours we will contact you to confirm the details of your booking and provide you with the documentation.
