Discover this spiritual, cultural and gastronomic route. And some of the most beautiful villages of western Asturias within easy reach.

Itinerary

Way of St. James from Gijón to Ribadeo
Way of St. James from Gijón to Ribadeo

Day 1. Arrival in Gijón

The first thing to do to enjoy this Way of St. James from Gijón to Ribadeo is to get to this coastal town in Asturias. Gijón, in Asturian Xixón, is a town that deserves to be visited at leisure, given its vast cultural heritage. What you should definitely not miss is the Cimadevilla neighbourhood, with the old fish market building, the church of San Pedro Apóstol, the Roman baths and the Plaza Mayor and the town hall.

Day 2. Stage Gijón - Avilés | 25,4 km

Distance: 25.4 km.
Duration: 6 hours
Accommodation: Avilés

The first stage of the Way of St. James from Gijón, it connects two important towns in Asturias and has to cross two industrial areas. However, it also has interesting cultural elements, such as the 5,000-year-old necropolis of Monte Areo, with dolmens and prehistoric burial mounds. Or like the Fonte les Xanes, with its stories of xanes (a kind of fairies from Asturian folklore).

Day 3. Stage Avilés - Muros de Nalón

Distance: 23.2 km.
Duration: 5:45 hours
Accommodation: Muros de Nalón

On the third day the stage will finish in Muros de Nalón. The official route on this section was modified in 2018 by turning off at Piedras Blancas. However, it is still not sufficiently conditioned and you have to walk along the hard shoulder of the AS-320 for more than a kilometre. Some pilgrims prefer to continue to El Pito and from there turn off the Camino to spend a night in Cudillero.

Day 4. Stage Muros de Nalón - Soto de Luiña

Distance: 15.3 km.
Duration: 4 hours
AccommodationSoto de Luiña

A new stage of the Camino de Santiago from Gijón, mainly rural and with frequent, short but intense slopes. You will only approach the coast at the Concha de Artedo beach. Some pilgrims, as it is a fairly short stretch, take the opportunity to make a detour at El Pito, with spectacular houses of indianos, to go to Cudillero, where they can enjoy this magnificent fishing village.

In Soto de Luiña don't miss the church of Santa María, which was built on the site of an old chapel, or the Casa Rectoral, a former pilgrims' hospital just a few metres from the church.

Day 5. Stage Soto de Luiña - Cadavedo

Distance: 18.5 km.
Duration: 4:30 hours
Accommodation: Cadavedo

On this stage of the Camino de Santiago from Gijón, as soon as we start walking we will find two options: to continue along the Camín Real de las Ballotas, which runs parallel to the coast, or along the Sierra de Las Palancas, crossing the mountain. Both options are good, although the one that crosses the mountain is 2 km longer.

In any case, it is our favourite stage of this section of the Camino. If you continue along the Camín Real you will cross seven small valleys called ballotas or vaḷḷoutes, in Asturian. This way, you can enjoy the magnificent cliffs and beach area while crossing forests and pastures until the end of the stage in Cadavedo.

Port of Luarca, on the section of the Pilgrims' Route to Santiago de Compostela from Gijón to Ribadeo

Day 6. Stage Cadavedo - Luarca

Distance: 15.3 km.
Duration: 4 hours
Accommodation: Luarca

This section moves away from the coast and some of its kilometres follow the N-634. Starting this stage of the Camino de Santiago early from Gijón will allow you to enjoy the town of Luarca for longer.

You will pass through the villages of Villademoros and Querúas, where you will begin a beautiful route through oak and chestnut forests that leads to a national road that will allow you to cross the river Esva. You will soon reach the beautiful fishing village of Luarca, the end of the stage.

Day 7. Stage Luarca - La Caridad

Distance30.5 km.
Duration7:30 a.m.
Accommodation: The Charity

Penultimate stage of the Camino de Santiago from Gijón, leaving Ḷuarca behind and passing through small towns until you reach Navia, the main town you will pass through during this stage. Many pilgrims prefer to stop in Navia to have lunch and enjoy their wonderful traditional dessert, the veneres.

In doing so, you will leave about 8 km to your destination, La Caridad, for the afternoon.

Day 8. Stage La Caridad - Ribadeo

Distance: 22.4 km.
Duration: 5:30 a.m.
Accommodation: Ribadeo

At last! The last stage of this section of the Northern Way, which leaves Asturias behind and enters Galicia by crossing the Eo estuary. Here you have several options, but our recommendation is to follow the coastal route that takes you to Tapia de Casariego and, further on, to Ribadeo, crossing over the Puente de los Santos (Bridge of the Saints). This bridge allows you to easily cross the Eo estuary and saves you 6 km of walking.

In Tapia you can enjoy a wonderful promenade with viewpoints overlooking the sea. Finally, you will reach Ribadeo, the end of the stage. Be sure to visit the historic quarter with its Indian houses; the 12th century chapel of Atalaia and its views.

Day 9. Ribadeo and surroundings

After rest and breakfast, our services come to an end. However, if you have time, you won't want to miss a visit to the world famous Praia das Catedrais, the result of the power of the sea and the patience of the weather.

This natural wonder is protected from tourism, so access is restricted to a certain number of people per day. It also depends on a strict tide schedule, as it is not accessible at high tide.

If you would like to visit it, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can arrange access and timetables. Another option is to visit an ethnographic complex from the 18th century based on the integral use of the river's hydraulic energy, with large houses, cabazos, hórreos and mills.

Lodging

During the Camino, sleeping well and resting is essential. Here are some images of some of the accommodation we work with on this route.

Frequent Asked Questions

Yes, in our programmes you choose the starting date. The Camino de Santiago can be done all year round, although in January and February many accommodations are closed for rest, so if you want to do it in those dates, we recommend you that you consult us first

Most of the accommodation is located next to the Camino, at the place where you will finish each stage. When you make your booking we will generate for you the documentation with the exact address and other location data.

If the available accommodation is more than 1.5 km from the Camino, we will provide a transfer at no extra cost to you.

In our programmes we include the option of hiring a luggage transfer service, with a limit of 1 piece of luggage of up to 20 kg per person. There is the option to increase the number of items, but this is not usually necessary. In addition, we will give you luggage identifiers (similar to those at airports) so that you can leave your backpack with the accommodation staff, properly identified, and the shuttle will pick it up there. It is important to do this before 8:00 am, so that our team can take it to the next accommodation before your arrival. In addition, if you plan to travel with more luggage than the Camino, we can also transport the luggage you are not going to use to your last accommodation, so that you can then continue your journey.

Although the Camino is done on foot or by bicycle, you may need a vehicle from the airport to the starting point of your pilgrimage or to make a trip to a place of interest near the end of your stage. In these cases, we provide you with private transport vehicles whose price varies depending on the distance. You can see it among the options by clicking on "I want to book my Camino".

By default and compulsory, all our programmes include travel insurance with specific coverage for the Camino de Santiago. You can see the details in the section Insurance of our website.

All our programmes include a 24-hour telephone support service, should you need help at any time during your experience. This means that you can also contact us outside office hours (when you are on pilgrimage).

If you want to book this programme, you have the following options available a form where you can indicate the starting date, the type of accommodation and a series of optional services. The price will be updated according to the options you choose, so you have full control. Once you have configured your trip, click on "Book" to make the payment.

Once we receive your request, you will automatically receive a proof of purchase and within 48 working hours we will contact you to confirm the details of your booking and provide you with the documentation.

In Proguías we also work with tailor-made programmes (short stages, intermediate rest days, itineraries different from those proposed, etc.). If you are looking for a Camino that meets your needs/preferences, you can ask us for a quote here.
