The Ribeira Sacra is a place where the senses are flooded. For the eyes, the shapes of the Sil river canyon and the colours of the slopes that plunge towards the water. For taste and smell, the vineyards of the Ribeira Sacra designation of origin, cultivated to the rhythm of the so-called heroic viticulture. For touch and hearing, the course of the water and the hardness of the cut stone.

Tasting the wines of the area, visiting the family wineries, discovering the largest concentration of Romanesque monasteries in Europe, perched on the slopes of the Sil, or sailing along the river to get a different perspective of the dimensions of this unique space are the best way to discover and understand the Ribeira Sacra, and this is what we offer, always accompanied by an expert guide.

Itinerary

A tour of the southern slopes of Ribeira Sacra

Our visit will focus on the southern slopes of the Ribeira Sacra, in the north of the province of Ourense, which is the only one in Galicia that has no sea, but enjoys the spectacular canyon of the river Sil. This is where the largest concentration of medieval monasteries in Europe is located, and this is where we will be travelling.

We will visit the San Pedro de RocasThis ancient hermitage, founded in the 6th century and carved into the rock, is striking for its forms and the perseverance of the first Christian communities in Galicia. We will also have the opportunity to see the monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de SilA jewel that has come down to us naked, and in which it is possible to appreciate the beautiful forms of Galician Romanesque architecture.

But there will also be time to take in the cliffs of the canyon, which at some points reach 500 metres in height with slopes of more than fifty degrees that curve to become almost vertical.

We will do so from some of the most spectacular points, such as the Cabezoás viewpoint or that of the Pena de MatacásThe river itself can also be explored from below, with a boat trip on the river itself from the Doade jetty.

And, to round off the experience, we will also visit a traditional winery in this vineyard-filled area. We will discover what heroic viticulture is and why it is not just a commercial name. Designation of Origin Ribeira Sacra.
