The Camino de Santiago from LogroƱo to Burgos offers, in addition to the experience of the pilgrimage, an immense variety of cultural elements that are very worthwhile as a complementary activity. It begins at LogroƱo, the gateway to the Castilian plateau and capital of one of the most important wine regions in Europe: La Rioja. And then it continues along a route full of monasteries and cathedrals, caves and mining complexes and the famous prehistoric site of Atapuerca.

As the profile of these stages is generally very gentle, it is a perfect opportunity to make the most of the afternoons with complementary activities focused on getting to know this rich landscape, gastronomy and culture. The 122 kilometres that separate the two capitals will be easier and more interesting. On arrival at Burgos, the end of this section, you will find one of the cities declared a World Heritage Site.

The Way of St. James from LogroƱo

ā–ŒDay 1. Arrival at LogroƱo

To do the Camino de Santiago from LogroƱo you will have to get there on your own (or we can help you with private transport).

In any case, if you don't know the city, we recommend that you book an extra night before your trip so that you can enjoy the historic quarter and visit one of the historic wineries of La Rioja, where you can discover the wine-making process and enjoy its famous wines with designation of origin.

ā–ŒDay 2. Stage LogroƱo - NĆ”jera

Distance: 29 km.
Duration: 6:30 hours
Accommodation: NƔjera

The first stage is moderately steep. We leave the city along the RĆŗa Vieja and climb to the top of La Grajera, from where you can see LogroƱo on one side and, on the other, our next destination: Navarrete.

In this section you will find the ruins of the old pilgrims' hospital of San Juan de Acre, founded in 1185. From there, with a gentle ascent, the Way continues towards the Alto de San AntĆ³n, which leads to the very interesting town of NĆ”jera through a rural area.

ā–ŒDay 3. Stage NĆ”jera - Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Distance: 20.7 km.
Duration: 5:15 hours.
Accommodation: Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Following the pattern of the previous stage, today's stage can also be considered easy and with few gradients. It runs along agricultural tracks that show the transition from vineyards to cereal crops.

After passing Azofra and CirueƱa, from a hill we will see the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the end of our stage. The cathedral of Santo Domingo and the striking history of the saint after whom it is named await you.

ā–ŒDay 4. Stage Santo Domingo de la Calzada - Belorado

Distance: 22 km.
Duration: 5:30 hours
Accommodation: Belorado

This stage has practically no gradients and it is noticeable that we are approaching Castile and its plains. At the pass halfway between GraĆ±Ć³n and Redecilla del Camino we finally leave La Rioja to enter the region of Castilla y LeĆ³n, in the province of Burgos. More than half of the French Way runs through this region, the largest in Spain.

When you get to Redecilla del Camino, don't pass by without visiting the church of the Virgen de la Calle. It is well worth a visit. And then you can continue along the road until you reach Belorado, where you can enjoy a good caparrĆ³n and a pleasant stroll through the town.

ā–ŒDay 5. Stage Belorado - San Juan de Ortega

Distance: 23.9 km.
Duration: 6 hours.
Accommodation: San Juan de Ortega

Due to its difficulty, this stage can be subdivided into two sections: an initial, easy one, with hardly any gradients, until just before Villafranca de Montes de Oca. And a second section to San Juan de Ortega, marked by a steep ascent in the first kilometres and a gradual descent without intermediate villages.

ā–ŒDay 6. Stage San Juan de Ortega - Burgos

Distance: 25.8 km.
Duration: 6:30 hours
Accommodation: Burgos

The last stage of this programme consists of a pleasant stretch through the mountain range of Atapuerca before proceeding to Burgos.

The historic route goes through industrial areas, but there is a variant, called CastaƱares, which borders the industrial estate, adding only half a kilometre more. If you choose this option, pay special attention to the yellow arrows.

ā–ŒDay 7. Burgos (and more)

The seventh day is for you. To rest and explore the city of Burgos. After breakfast our services end, but the city asks you to walk its streets, visit its gothic cathedral, the Monastery of Las Huelgas, etc.

Suckling lamb is the most popular dish in the area and there is a wide range of dishes to try in the vicinity of the cathedral. If you prefer sweets, yemas de Burgos, made with egg yolk, sugar and water, are the star dessert.

And, if you like, we can organise a visit to the nearby Monastery of San Pedro de CardeƱa, a Trappist abbey founded in 902.

Lodging

During the Camino, sleeping well and resting is essential. Here are some images of some of the accommodation we work with on this route.

Frequent Asked Questions

Yes, in our programmes you choose the starting date. The Camino de Santiago can be done all year round, although in January and February many accommodations are closed for rest, so if you want to do it in those dates, we recommend you that you consult us first.Ā

Most of the accommodation is located next to the Camino, at the place where you will finish each stage. When you make your booking we will generate for you the documentation with the exact address and other location data.Ā

If the available accommodation is more than 1.5 km from the Camino, we will provide a transfer at no extra cost to you.Ā

In our programmes we include the option of hiring a luggage transfer service, with a limit of 1 piece of luggage of up to 20 kg per person. There is the option to increase the number of items, but this is not usually necessary. In addition, we will give you luggage identifiers (similar to those at airports) so that you can leave your backpack with the accommodation staff, properly identified, and the shuttle will pick it up there. It is important to do this before 8:00 am, so that our team can take it to the next accommodation before your arrival. In addition, if you plan to travel with more luggage than the Camino, we can also transport the luggage you are not going to use to your last accommodation, so that you can then continue your journey.

Although the Camino is done on foot or by bicycle, you may need a vehicle from the airport to the starting point of your pilgrimage or to make a trip to a place of interest near the end of your stage. In these cases, we provide you with private transport vehicles whose price varies depending on the distance. You can see it among the options by clicking on "I want to book my Camino".

By default and compulsory, all our programmes include travel insurance with specific coverage for the Camino de Santiago. You can see the details in the section Insurance of our website.Ā

All our programmes include a 24-hour telephone support service, should you need help at any time during your experience. This means that you can also contact us outside office hours (when you are on pilgrimage).Ā

If you want to book this programme, you have the following options available a form where you can indicate the starting date, the type of accommodation and a series of optional services. The price will be updated according to the options you choose, so you have full control. Once you have configured your trip, click on "Book" to make the payment.

Once we receive your request, you will automatically receive a proof of purchase and within 48 working hours we will contact you to confirm the details of your booking and provide you with the documentation.Ā

In ProguĆas we also work with tailor-made programmes (short stages, intermediate rest days, itineraries different from those proposed, etc.). If you are looking for a Camino that meets your needs/preferences, you can ask us for a quote here.
